This page is to provide you with a list of things you may want to purchase or find second hand for your puppy.
- Food & Water Bowl (stainless steel works well, avoid anything ceramic or breakable at first)
- Collar and Leash (flat buckle collar and 6′ leash) – provided in puppy pack
- Long line/leash – 15′ – 25′ – used for recall training, allowing some freedom outdoors before their recall is 100% and for training.
- Dog Tags (Name and phone number(s) address is optional.
- Crate (for the home) – a 36″ wire crate with a divider is ideal for the puppy into adulthood
- Bedding for their crate – a small fleece blacket is ideal. Fleece doesn’t shred into strings that could be dangreous. Save fancy bedding for when they are older.
- Dog Bed (Nothing too fancy to start – something simple and easy to clean)
- Biodegradable poop bags – we will provide a roll however you’ll likely go through that quickly
- Get Serious or another suitable urine cleaning spray (specific for dogs)
- Treats (small treats are best for puppy training)
- Crumps Mini Trainers
- Ziwipeak Food makes great training treats
- Zukes Mini Naturals
- Training pouch (to keep treats when you are on a walk)
- Puppy shampoo
- Chew Toys
- Kong
- Nylabone
- Puzzle Toys (see video below of how to stuff a toy)
- West Paw
- Planet Dog
- Kong
- Nina Ottoson
- Interactive Toys – different from chew toys. These will be the toys you allow the puppy to play with when supervised or playing with you. This is anything that can be chewed/destroyed/swallowed as well as toys you want to reserve for training or playing with you like tug toys
- Toy Box or Drawer to put toys away when you can’t supervise or don’t want them playing with them (eg. Interactive toys)
- Exercise Pen – if you are going to have to leave your puppy for longer periods setting up an exercise pen with a potty area will help them not have accidents in their crate. It can also be a way to contain your puppy while you cannot supervise them to prevent them learning to chew things you don’t want them to chew in your home.
- Baby gates – this is only necessary if you will need to keep your puppy out of specific rooms or from doing the stairs.
- Towels for your new puppy (you won’t want to use your good ones, so old towels work well, set aside for the use with your puppy/dog)
- Vehicle Restraint or Crate for the Car (if your car is large enough a crate is superior to a seat belt). Your puppy/dog should never ride in the car without a restraint. In an accident they become a projectile and can not only injury themselves, but other passengers.
- If you have kids in the car, make sure the puppy is restrained away from them. You can test this by putting the puppy in the restraint then using a treat to lure them towards the seat, if their body can touch the seat then it can impact your child in an accident.
